Ablaze

Liz wasn’t sure what to expect when Duke’s voice greeted her on the phone earlier that evening. She knew he’d have to check in here and there, but she had the sense that wasn’t all the call was about. She’d seen a certain look in his eyes when she came face to face with him again—a look that said he hadn’t forgotten about their first night.

There was no doubt they had a few things to clear the air about—that they needed to address the elephant in the room.

It’d been a year and three months since Jason disappeared and nine months since Janet’s wedding. Liz was over Jason for the most part—her hope was dead that he’d come back, but beyond that, she was able to see so many more facets and corners of her life that she’d been blind to before—as if shades that’d blocked her vision were removed and now there were all these new colors, so much more light.

Now here she was beneath Duke, ending her dry spell at last and beginning to hope for a whole lot more.

Duke worked her body in a way that she could get used to—addicted to, even. His tender whispers and masculine groans heightened her own pleasure at having him push against her yearning walls as she became one with him at last, holding on to him for the ride.

A few moments after they both reached the mind-numbing pinnacle and then straightened themselves up, Liz cleared her throat. “Obviously, we definitely have to keep this from Ramon. I mean, he already suspects we like each other or had something going on in the past, but we can’t date in front of him.”

“I think everyone here gets the conflict of interest. But I have to see you again.”

“So what do we do? Meet here at night? How secret are we gonna keep this?”

Duke looked thoughtful. “I definitely can’t encourage you to leave him alone or even with a babysitter just yet. You just got him! So yeah, we can meet here and get to know each other more—outside of that, of course. We can chat. Tell me about your day, Ramon’s day, whatever. And maybe, if you’re lucky, some of that.” She slapped his arm, and he grinned at her. “I can even bring you food and we can eat here…”

“I don’t really eat after nine p.m.,” she said.

He put his hands up in mock defense. “Well, pardon me.”

“It’s just one of my rules—I’m not on some crazy diet or anything. But I pretty much have a schedule when it comes to that stuff.”

“At some point, however, we’ll have to come clean. I expect a proper date in the near future, Liz. Say…next Saturday? In the meantime, how about I meet you nightly until then?”

“Deal,” Liz said, smiling at him.

Boy, did he look handsome. And delicious.

She kissed him on the cheek, preparing to leave the car and go back inside, but he grabbed her face and planted a kiss on her lips. He
